NBC’s “Parenthood” could already fill a small commuter plane with what has to be one of the largest (and best) regular ensemble casts on television, but that doesn’t mean that the second year family dramedy can’t still find room for more guest stars on the call sheet.
On Tuesday (July 27), the “Parenthood” creative team revealed to a visiting cadre of reporters from the Television Critics Association that Billy Baldwin is joining the cast for this season in a recurring role as Adam Braverman’s (Peter Krause) boss.
HitFix caught up with executive producer and regular series director Lawrence Trilling after the panel to get a little more information about NBC’s acquisition of a second Baldwin.
“We’re very excited to have Billy,” Trilling says. “He plays Adam’s boss and he eventually becomes potentially a love interest for Sarah [Lauren Graham] and so we needed somebody who had both the kind of comedic chops and the stature that could stand up to a Lauren Graham and a Peter Krause, to be able to go toe-to-toe with them and potential even be intimidating to them. We thought it was a nice piece of casting because he’s kind of a rough-around-the-edges, funny, vulnerable, kind of larger-than-life character in this boss.”
Baldwin was most recently seen on The CW’s “Gossip Girl.” Before that, he was a regular on ABC’s “Dirty Sexy Money,” a show that also featured Krause.
“That helped a lot because they have a relationship. They like each other. They’re friends,” Trilling explains. “The idea is that Adam’s character is the beleaguered one who has to take care of the day-to-day stuff while the boss gets to be the visionary and then go on his yacht. So he’s the one having all the fun while Adam’s the one making everything work. That contrast will be really fun to play as a comedic team.”
Baldwin is expected to appear in at least eight or nine episodes in the first half of the season.
How will his storyline be integrated in the myriad other dramas dominating the Braverman clan?
“As it is, we struggle to find enough for these amazing actors to do, so it’s always a challenge to say, ‘Hey, now there’s real estate that’s going to someone else,’” Trilling acknowledges. “But we do have a remarkable amount of generosity in this cast, because they realize, they go, ‘I’m gonna get mine, too.’ So for Lauren and Peter, they get to work with Billy Baldwin. And it’s not only for Billy, it’s fodder for them as well, stuff for Peter and Lauren to play. It energizes. It’s a net positive to bring new blood in, whether it’s Billy Baldwin or Minka Kelly.”
Wait a second. So Minka Kelly will be back after multiple Season One episodes as helpful (and sexy) therapist Gaby?
“She’s going to come back in a significant way this season. She’s going to be working with Max and getting involved with the family and developing a friendship with Crosby. She’s going to be playing a significant role for us this season.”
“Parenthood” kicks off its second season on Tuesday, Sept. 21.

Fantasy casting time! If/when The Naughty List gets made into a movie, who would be in your dream cast?
Minka Kelly is Tessa all the way. I actually pictured her when I was writing. For Aiden I had one particular blond, gorgeous singer who would be perfect, but I can’t remember his name. And for Joel in SO MANY BOYS—think Milo Ventimiglia. Source, thanks to Debra for the link

CBS has given a 13-episode order to midseason sitcom “Mad Love.” Pickup is expected to be finalized shortly.
Multi-cam laffer, from Sony Pictures TV and CBS TV Studios, revolves around four twentysomethings searching for love in New York City.
Show continues the streak of success for exec producer Jamie Tarses, who has had a banner pilot season — landing two comedies on ABC — Matthew Perry starrer “Mr. Sunshine” and couples ensemble “Happy Endings” — as well as the buddy lawyer dramedy on TNT, “Franklin and Bash.”
“Mad Love” comes from Tarses’ brother, scribe/exec producer Matt Tarses, and stars Minka Kelly (above), Ashley Austin Morris, Hal Williams, Jason Biggs, Tyler Labine and Sarah Wright. Pamela Fryman directed the pilot.

CBS has picked up just one midseason show for 2010-11 so far, but that may change in the next couple of weeks.
Nina Tassler, the president of CBS Entertainment, says that 12 of the 15 pilots it ordered tested well enough to go on the air. Given that and the fact that the network currently has no new comedies in reserve and only one drama — the “Criminal Minds” spinoff starring Forest Whitaker — more pickups could be on their way in the near future.
On the comedy side, “we have ‘Mad Love’ [starring Lizzy Caplan, Jason Biggs and Minka Kelly], ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ [from the 'How I Met Your Mother' team] — there are still a lot of [choices],” Tassler says. “I don’t mean to imply anything by omission, but I think we had a very strong development season. The objective goal was we needed to have a lot of options.”

MTV: How did you convince Derek Jeter to sign up for his cameo?
McKay: Of all the cast we got for this movie — and we got some pretty tremendous people — Derek Jeter was the most essential get for the whole movie. We wrote it into the script that he was a major part of the story. He’s a fan of Will and the movies we’ve done in the past. He’s a fan of Mark. The crazy thing is [the Yankees] won the World Series, and we’re shooting a scene about 10 days afterward. I’m like, “How does this guy come off that — there must be crazy parties, he must be exhausted — and then show up and have his lines memorized?” Sure enough, he was there and he was game. Professional athletes tend to fall into one of two categories. They’re either super-conceited and standoffish, or they can be sweet and nice. He’s definitely a sweet guy, very unpretentious. His girlfriend [Minka Kelly] is beautiful and just goofy and nice. He’s a fan. He’s hosted “SNL.” He’s got that sincerity that just works if he’s delivering a line straight. He’s an old-fashioned baseball star. Source, thanks to Debra

Reaper’s Tyler Labine is joining the cast of CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot True Love, about the relationships of four friends in New York, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The story revolves around a kind lawyer, Henry (Jason Biggs), who falls for a stranger (Minka Kelly) while in a long-term relationship; Labine will play Henry’s cynical best friend. He replaces Dan Fogler, who was originally cast in the role, but the pilot will be in second position to his current Fox show, Sons of Tucson, which he’ll remain committed to if it stays on the air.

Save Parenthood! Sorry, wrong article, but I just love this show. What’s happening on it?
When Minka Kelly arrives as Max’s new Asperger’s aid on Parenthood, things take a rocky jealous turn for Kristina (Monica Potter) and Adam (Peter Krause). Can we just take a second to welcome Minka back to our television screens? We Friday Night Light fans have missed you so. And poor Julia (Erika Christensen). She’s still trying to wiggle her way back into her daughter’s life, this time by teaching Sydney a little self-defense. Hope this yields better results than those swim lessons.
